If your gutters are doing what they’re supposed to do, they will collect water runoff and send it away from the foundation of your house. But when gutters get clogged, especially around fall time when the leaves are blowing and debris is drifting around, water can get backed up underneath your shingles and quickly overflow onto the siding of your house. This can cause damage to not only your roof, but the siding as well.
Get rid of nearby tree limbs
Damage caused over time from walking on your roof is similar to that of trees rubbing against shingles, and can be even more destructive during windstorms. To avoid this issue, simply trim branches that hover around your roof when needed, make sure to trim enough off so that on even the windiest days they aren’t close to your gutters and roof.
Flashing helps create a watertight seal where two roof planes come together. To inspect flashing, find a safe vantage point where you can see it. If you see any dents, rust, missing fasteners or the sealant is rotting away, it might be time to get in contact with a contractor.
Check for leaks in your ceiling
A quick look at the exterior of your roof might tell you a lot about its current condition, but what lurks underneath might be dangerous. Be sure to take a more in-depth look at your ceilings and attic, keep an eye out for moisture or signs of water damage. After water damage occurs, mildew and mold begin to build. Respiratory infections, asthma, allergies and other hazardous health issues can affect you and your family.
As a homeowner, there are many things you can do yourself to increase your roof’s lifespan, but you may miss signs of damage that a professional will see right away. We recommend having a roof inspection at least once a year, and after every severe storm.
